There were all kinds of them. Some came from nearby places like Helsinki, or Lithuania and others did a long trip, coming from\u00a0 places such as United States or Australia. Some of them are anthropologists with a settled professional background and others are young promises of anthropology.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.easaonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA)<\/a> is the official organizer of the \u201cWhy the world needs anthropologists?\u201d event. This year some of our members of Antropolog\u00eda 2.0 were able to attend the third edition. And it did not leave us indifferent! For 48 hours we were able to meet and listen to excellent professionals who showed us new ways of understanding and applying anthropology.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1754\" style=\"width: 845px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-gallery wp-image-1754\" src=\"http:\/\/antropologia2-0.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Estonia-Why-the-world-needs-anthropologists-845x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"845\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: Aivo P\u00f6llu\u00e4\u00e4r<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Excellent professionals who showed us new ways of understanding and applying anthropology<\/h2>\n<p>We want to share with you some of their names, as we understand you will find them and their works interesting as well.<\/p>\n<p>We will start talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n3hvNchqsWc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Laura Korkulanin<\/a> a young croatian-slovenian who combines in her projects anthropology, design and communication. (Don&#8217;t miss her Project Give a Shit).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Margarita Ferreira<\/strong>, professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iade.europeia.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Creative University of IADE<\/a>, who gave a magnificent workshop in which she taught us how designers and anthropologists can work together.<\/p>\n<p>We also met <strong>Melissa Cefkins<\/strong>, an anthropologist who works in Silicon Valley for Nissan in the development of intelligent and self-driving cars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Miller<\/strong>, told us about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/why-we-post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the work he and his team have done<\/a> in different parts of the world studying the use of social networks and how this affects people&#8217;s lives.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we couldn&#8217;t not mention <strong>Dan Podjed<\/strong>, one of the organizers of the event, and lead investigator of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/dei\/events\/?eventno=28592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Drive Green Project <\/a>, a project in which anthropologists and engineers work together on a mobile application that promotes sustainable mobility.<\/p>\n<p>We also met <strong>Sten Tamkivi<\/strong>, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/teleport.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Teleport<\/a>, a website that helps you choose cities to live with your priorities in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Or <strong>Janice Perersen<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antropologerne.com\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Antropologerne<\/a>, who showed us how Open Data is being used successfully to solve problems specific to certain individuals and communities.<\/p>\n<p>And last, but not least the interesting visions of <a href=\"http:\/\/dimitrisdalakoglou.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Professor Dimitris Dalakoglou<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1756\" style=\"width: 845px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-gallery wp-image-1756\" src=\"http:\/\/antropologia2-0.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/crisol-antropologos-aplicados-845x640.jpg\" alt=\"crisol-antropologos-aplicados\" width=\"845\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: Aivo P\u00f6llu\u00e4\u00e4r<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The only Spaniards in the event<\/h2>\n<p>We were delighted with the talks, the hotspot \u00e1rea and the workshops. They certainly came as a breath of fresh air to us. But there was something that inevitably disturbed us. With more than 350 people from more than 20 different countries, we could not help but to be surprised when we found out that we were the only Spaniards there. Where are the Spanish anthropologists who dedicate themselves to the &#8220;applied side of anthropology&#8221;? During the event I was discussing this same issue with someone in a restroom. I cant recall who it was, but I remember that this person mentioned that anthropology in Spain, as in Latin America, had been encapsulated in a more romantic idea of anthropology. \u201cThey still focus on studying the exotic, with a certain paternalistic tint. In &#8220;protecting their cultures,&#8221; as if this ment necessarily to make them hermetic and immutable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Antropolog\u00eda 2.0 we dont think this is entirely true. But of course, we would like to see more familiar faces in the next &#8220;Why the world needs anthropologists?&#8221;.
