No challenge is most important than the care of our common home and the fight against climate change. One of the essential sectors in the pursuit of a cleaner and more sustainable world is the energy sector<\/strong>. Humans have always used various forms of energy in order to organize themselves socially and optimize their productive processes. The arrival of the 21st century and the adverse effects of a society versed in an unlimited consumption model have illustrated many questions about our energy production model.<\/p>\n

What can anthropology do for contributing to a more responsible and sustainable energy future?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The fifth “Why the world needs anthropologist” annual symposium will be held in Durham<\/strong> (UK) on October 28th and 29th 2017<\/strong>. This year the event named “Powering the Planet<\/strong>” will address how engineers and anthropologists can work together to design and implement energy-related innovation processes, with the goal of a cleaner and more sustainable world.<\/p>\n

The event will feature four specialists, who will represent four forms of energy: Benj Sykes<\/strong> (Earth), Sophie Bouly of Lesdain<\/strong> (Sun), Tanja Winther<\/strong> and Veronica Strang<\/strong> (Water). Issues such as social discourses on green energy, energy production and consumption, the “power” of materials such as water or Steel and the role of anthropology in a less carbon-dependent future will be accost.<\/p>\n

But … is this an event intended only for anthropologists? It is not! Year after year, the team of Why the world needs anthropologists<\/em> has been able to attract numerous companies, consultancies and professionals from other disciplines and areas to address different issues from a multidisciplinary approach<\/strong>. Wich makes the enviroment a great place for networking and meeting other people working in similar or different \u00e1reas in which you usually move.<\/p>\n

In Durham you will find projects like Energethics<\/strong>, focused on the Corporate Social Responsibility for energy companies and Practical Action<\/strong>, which develops technological solutions for the fight against poverty. Or PEOPLE<\/strong>, an innovative project that connects social scientists with different companies. Also, the prestigious Danish consultancy Anthropologerne<\/strong> is repeating their attendance another year.<\/p>\n

Of course, Antropolog\u00eda 2.0<\/strong> will also be present there, and we are already looking foward to being there with all this interesting anthropologists! We don\u2019t want to hide that the last edition of Why the world needs anthropology<\/em> (2016) was an important moment for us and gave us strength, motivation and the opportunity to get in touch with the most innovative applied anthropology in Europe.<\/p>\n

In this workshops<\/strong> assistants working in groups carry out different practical activities with companies and consultancies, where real issues are addressed in a professional but intimate context which is great for developing ideas and understanding better how other anthropologists work.
